Fascia and soffit

What fascia and soffit are

Look up at the edge of your roof: the board facing out is the fascia, and the panel under the overhang is the soffit. The fascia runs the length of the roof’s edge, over the ends of the rafters, and your gutters hang on it. The soffit covers the underside of the overhang, between the fascia and the wall, and many have vents that let the attic breathe.

Signs your fascia needs repair

Your gutters hang on the fascia board, so trouble with one often shows in the other. Here’s where to look.

  • Looking up at a soffit and fascia corner from below, the wood under the roof edge

    Wood rot and decay

Check the wood under your roof edge. If it’s soft, spongy or crumbly, water has gotten in.

  • Inside a gutter along a shingle roof, a hidden hanger holding it to the board behind

    Gutters sagging or pulling away

Hangers hold your gutter to the board. When the wood weakens, they let go.

  • A dark gutter along the painted roof edge of a white stucco home

    Peeling or blistering paint

Look along the face of the board. Bubbling or flaking paint means water is trapped behind it.

  • Looking up at a porch eave and its wood in full sun, a carved column below

    Cracking and warping

Check the corners and the long runs in full sun. Sun and swings in temperature crack and warp boards.

  • A dented, crushed dark downspout outlet at the edge of a slab

    Hail dents

After a storm, look at the face of your gutters and the metal wrap on the board.

Fascia and the jobs around it

Fascia is rarely a job on its own. It often gets replaced while new gutters go up, or after a hailstorm hits the roof edge. Here’s how we handle each, with a link to the page that covers it.

  • A tan gutter corner and downspout hung on the fascia, the soffit under it, against a blue sky.

Fascia and new gutters, done together

Gutters hang on the fascia, so they only hold as well as the board behind them. When the fascia is rotted or damaged, we replace it and hang your new seamless gutters on it in one job.

    Hail-damaged fascia

When hail dents or cracks the fascia, the board your gutters hang on, we replace the damaged boards so your gutters stay tight to the house. If a storm did the damage, our office will help you work with your insurance company.

Who do I call for fascia repair?

A roofer, a gutter company or an exterior contractor can all do it. Your gutters are fastened to the fascia, so a company that does both can fix the board and the gutters in one job, and we often do. Call 806-829-2622 or use the form below, and we’ll look at yours at the free estimate.

Can roofers repair fascia?

Many can, and fascia is often replaced along with a new roof. The gutters hang on the fascia, though, so they have to come off first and go back up after, and not every roofer does gutters. We work alongside roofers, so while yours does the roof, we can take care of the fascia and the gutters.

How much does it cost to replace rotted fascia?

It depends on how many feet of fascia have rotted, how high the roof edge is, which material it’s replaced with, and whether the gutters have to come down and go back up. Rot can also run further along the board than it looks from the ground. Call us and we’ll give you a price before any work starts.

What’s the difference between fascia and soffit?

The fascia is the long board along the edge of the roof. It caps the ends of the rafters, and it’s what your gutters are fastened to. The soffit is the underside of the roof’s overhang, running from the fascia back to the wall, and it’s often vented to let air into the attic. Together they close off the roof’s edge to rain, birds and pests.

Do you work in winter?

Yes. We replace fascia in winter too, even in below-freezing weather, so a rotted fascia board doesn’t have to wait for spring. Call us and we’ll come look at it.
